Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques 2021 Holiday Advent Box (+ Instagram Giveaway!)

"Long time, no blog" seems like a major oversimplification of these many months of silence here on the website.  Like for many of us, the last 18 months have been a lot, and I also started a new job back in March, so, all-told, maintaining the blog has just not panned out this year like I had hoped.

I've still been around periodically on Instagram, so I haven't completely disappeared.  And in other exciting news, I was asked to team up with Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques on their 2021 Holiday Advent Box ($65 USD for $138 of goodies, 10% off with code <naturallabeauty>), which has had me working behind the scenes on creating a collaboration product for this year's release.  You may recall my love for last year's box, and I have to say, this year's is EVEN BETTER!  I'm beyond excited to finally share it with you all.

Keep reading for a full reveal of the 2021 Advent Box contents, then head over to Instagram and enter to win a box for yourself!

Blush Crush: New + Old Favourites ft. Aether, Lauren Brooke, Clove + Hallow, Fitglow + more!

Despite wearing masks that cover most of my cheeks whenever I leave the house these days, I’ve really gotten into blush over the last several months.  There’s just something about a flushed cheek that’s been doing it for me, and I’ve also fully embraced cream blush formulas for the first time.

I wear powder foundation many days, so all of these have been been tested over both powder and cream/liquid base formulas without any issues.

Fall + Winter Empties / Products I've Used Up

Happy almost 2021!  I can’t think of a better way to round out this blogging year than by moving some trash out with my latest batch of empties.  Here's a look at everything I've used up over the last several months...

Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques 2020 Advent Box (Unboxing All 12 Days!)

I was so excited to receive the new Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques 2020 Advent Box in the mail last week -- honestly, I think it was the most fun I’ve had opening a package in a good while!  I’m a Lauren Brooke affiliate, which means that I periodically receive products to share on Instagram, but I’m under no obligation to post about them here on the blog.  No one at Lauren Brooke HQ has any idea that I’m writing this blog post, but, as soon as I received the Advent Box, I knew I had to share it ASAP, and also that I didn’t want to be limited to just the constraints of an Instagram caption.

Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques, if you aren’t already familiar with the brand, makes natural and cruelty-free products with food-grade, organic ingredients.  Everything is handcrafted in the USA, and the company aims for skincare and makeup that is not only non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals, but that also nourishes you through your skin.

Fall Favourites (ft. Derma E, MetaPora, Sweet Leilani, Consonant + more!)

It’s been a while since my last favourites post here on the blog, so I’m pretty long overdue!  Today's batch is mostly skincare, but I think that’s pretty fitting for this year -- my focus has definitely been more consistently on skincare than makeup since staying home these last many months. Also, while I’m calling this Fall Favourites, most of these are things I’ve been loving since at least the summer...

#Wishlist Wednesday: Black-Owned Green Beauty

I’d intended for this post to go up shortly after my comparable one highlighting Indigenous-owned brands in July, but here we are, months later!  Better late than never, right?  I want to take this overdue time to shine my (small) spotlight on some of the amazing Black-owned products and brands in the green beauty sphere. This is in no way an exhaustive list, just some of the products that have caught my eye over the last several months (or even longer!)

Jacq’s Revitalizing Face Toner

This is a hydrating floral tea made with mint, hibiscus, chamomile, burdock root, rose, and more.  It also includes moisturizing ingredients like aloe and sweet almond, rosehip, and sea buckthorn oils, and works to restore optimal skin pH.  The ingredients are right up my alley and the beautiful pink colour is speaking to me too.

Lip Bar Face Palettes

Lip Bar is, of course, best known for their lip products, but in these mask-wearing days, I’m more so drawn to the company's face palettes.  Each skin tone-coordinated quad includes a setting powder, blush, bronzer, and highlighter, and I can’t help thinking the shades would also pair together beautifully on the eyes.

Omiaje Herbal Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner

I haven’t had the best luck co-washing with regular conditioners, but I’m curious to try a dedicated cleansing conditioner to see how that might change things.  The Herbal Co-Wash uses willow bark and witch hazel extracts for cleansing and also includes a host of nourishing and strengthening ingredients like marshmallow root, babassu oil, horsetail extract, and provitamin B5.  Omiaje’s styling products are super intriguing too!

Josephine Cosmetics Eye/Dazzle Liquid Metallic Eyeshadows

I had a hard time picking just one product from Josephine Cosmetics to feature, but nothing gets me as excited makeup-wise as a beautiful metallic/shimmery eye!  These highly pigmented liquid shadows promise just that with rich and sparkling colour and instant, long lasting glamour. Available in six glimmery shades that can also double as liners, they look just beautiful!

Alaffia Everyday Shea Shave Cream

Alaffia is a longtime favourite of mine for great performing and inexpensive hair and body products, but one that I’ve never tried is their Shave Cream.  My current brand of choice has become increasingly difficult to find, but this looks like a fantastic alternative with a similar lotiony formula.  The Shave Cream is available in three essential oil scents and unscented.

Lovinah Copper Peptide & EGF Ampoule

From ingredients to packaging to price, Lovinah epitomizes luxury skincare to me. Beyond that, what really sparks my interest is how the company incorporates ingredients not often seen in green beauty lines, like the copper peptide and epidermal growth factor in this ampoule. I haven't used either one before, but both are known to be excellent ingredients for hydration and anti-aging.  Lovinah’s founder, Joy, also created Black & Luxe over the summer, a site that showcases other great black-owned beauty, skincare, and wellness products.

Bask & Bloom Brahmi Root Hair Masque

I’d like to give my hair a little more attention before the cold weather sets in here, and this repairative hair mask looks like just the thing!  Alongside numerous moisturizing ingredients, it includes an ayurvedic herbal infusion of brahmi, burdock, marshmallow, yucca, slippery elm, and horsetail for added conditioning and to promote healthy growth.

Unsun Hand Cream SPF 15

Our hands are exposed to everything, but they’re an area that’s often neglected when it comes to sun protection.  Sure, you could apply a regular body sunscreen, but since those often lack the elegance and feel of a good hand cream, it’s not something most of us do.  Which is why Unsun’s fast absorbing hand cream is so tempting to me!  The formula, which claims to be water resistant for 40 minutes, combines rich emollients, revitalizing and anti-aging botanicals, and mineral SPF.

Plain Jane Beauty Blush Refills

Plain Jane offers an extensive line of makeup, but what stood out to me most is that the pressed eye shadows and blushes are sold as refill pans with minimal packaging.  The blushes are calling my name, and I also love the look of the cream concealers/color correctors, which look like they might be housed in eco-friendly paper tubes.  The company also has clear swatches of almost everything and sells inexpensive samples to help with choosing colours online.

The Honey Pot Feminine Hygiene Products

Mainstream feminine hygiene/cleansing product marketing can be pretty troubling, so I always feel the need to include a disclaimer before talking about these kinds of products.  I don’t believe anyone needs feminine cleansing products because lady parts are inherently gross or dirty, but I think they’re great if you experience sensitivity with other products or if you just want a dedicated product for that area.  I like the cheekiness of the company’s name and their Sensitive Wash, made with apple cider vinegar, calendula, and colloidal silver, looks like something I would like.  The brand also makes wipes and menstrual and soothing products.

Soap Distillery Cocktail Inspired Bar Soaps

I don’t really drink, but the idea of soaps crafted to smell like cocktails is still really fun to me.  I also love the company’s attention to sustainability -- soap packaging is plastic-free and biodegradable, and the company forgoes palm oil and any essential oils like sandalwood or palo santo with questionable or unsustainable harvesting/production methods.  Note: some scents include fragrance oils, while others, like the Gin and Tonic bars pictured, are made using just essential oils.

Free + True Marigold Morning AM Creamy Gel Cleanser

I’ve heard a lot of positive buzz about Free + True, and the “creamy gel” description of this cleanser sounds like everything I look for in a face wash.  The formula is pH balanced and its stellar ingredients include hyaluronic acid, sunflower oil, calendula, papaya, and plantain extracts, and lots more.  Moonlight Milk, the company's nighttime balm-to-milk cleanser, looks just as tantalizing too!

Inahsi Naturals Rock Your Curls Curl Enhancing Cream // Coconut Avocado Curl Defining Custard // Aloe Hibiscus Leave-In Conditioner & Detangler

Inahsi’s founder, who has a history in cosmetic and personal care manufacturing and formulation, created these products specifically for all types of curly hair, and honestly, I’m intrigued by most of the line!  The ingredients look amazing and I love that everything is available in inexpensive 2-oz mini sizes if you’re just looking to test the waters.

FrizeFrize Make Me Smile Hair Gel // CurlMix Flaxseed Gel // EcoSlay Orange Marmalade

I’m grouping these together because all three are all flax-based hair gels.  Gels are my usual go-to for wash day curl scrunching, and I’ve heard a lot of good things about flax-based formulas.  The EcoSlay is scented with sweet orange essential oil, and FrizeFrize and Curl Mix offer both scented and unscented options.

I’d love to know any of your favourites that I might have missed! Feel free to leave them in the comments here or come chat with me over on Instagram:)

#WishlistWednesday: Indigenous-Owned Green Beauty

I have very mixed feelings about Canada Day this year and won't be doing anything to celebrate, but, what with it being Wednesday, it does seem like the perfect time to feature some Indigenous-owned green beauty brands and products that have caught my eye recently.  These aren't all Canadian, but they are all self-identified Indigenous, Aboriginal, Native, and/or First Nations products.

Spring Empties / Products I've Used Up

I seem to be incapable of putting together an empties post these days until I've accumulated a ridiculous number of products, but there you have it!  My last empties post was only about three months ago, but I've been making a dedicated effort to finish off older products and anything close to empty, so things have piled up quickly!

Keep reading for mini reviews of all the products I've used up over the last few months...

Mega Empties! Skincare, Makeup, Body + Hair

It’s hard to believe that my last empties post was almost two years ago!  Don't worry, I haven’t held on to my trash from that entire time, but I’ve got my empties from the last six months to a year.  I’m going to speed through these with very mini reviews, but feel free to ask questions if you're curious or want more details on anything.

Fair warning: it's going to be a long one!

Fall Favourites ft. Ursa Major, T•Langhans, SoulTree, Iremia + more!

I hate that I'm in a position to apologize, yet again, for how inconsistent my blogging has been this year, but there you have it. Fact is, I'm just not in a position to reasonably commit to a certain number of posts per week or month right now, but happy to be posting when I can. (I've been sharing more on Instagram, in case you don't follow me there already.)

Today, I want to share some products I've been loving recently. These might be better described as joint summer/fall favourites, but, regardless, they're items that have stood out to me over the last several months, while I've been away from the blog.

iHerb Favourites (+ extra discounts until April 30!)

It's no surprise, if you've read much of my blog, that I'm a big fan of iHerb.  I made my first order in October of 2011, and I'd estimate I've placed between two and six orders every year since!  iHerb is a great source for all kinds of healthy products at a discount -- I most often purchase cosmetics and personal care products, but they also carry a good selection of food, supplements, and household, baby, and cleaning products.

I've had this post on my blog to-do list for a couple months, but with some extra promotions running this weekend, it seemed like a great time to finally fit it in!  Right now, most makeup on the website is currently discounted an extra 10%.  If you've never ordered before, you can also save $10 off your first order of $15 or more (up from a usual 5-10%!).  Both offers are running until the end of the month (April 30).  You can also get an extra 2.5% cashback on your purchases by shopping through Rakuten/Ebates.

I am an iHerb affiliate, but whether you choose to shop through my links or not, I think they're a great source for affordable brands and products, especially for those of us outside the US or with more limited local access to products.  For fellow Canadians, I suggest shipping with one of the duties & taxes included options to avoid any surprise charges at the door.  I like DHL since it's often discounted for purchases over $40 and almost always arrives within 2-3 days.

Let's get to the goodies!  I've explored a lot of iHerb's catalogue over the years, but these are the items I continue to purchase time and time again.

Winter Favourites ft. Osea, Batty's Bath, Consonant, Luk Beautifood + More

My biggest issue with blogging these days is that there's just never enough time to write about everything I want to share.  I've been more active over on Instagram the last couple months, but I know not everyone follows me on there, so I always want to keep current here on the blog too.

With that in mind, today seemed like the perfect time to talk about some recent favourites.  These 6 standouts are products that I've been loving and consistently reaching for over the last few months.  We've had some crazy cold temperatures here in Toronto, so, not surprisingly, these all ended up being products that excel in the moisture department.

Inika Makeup: Certified Organic, Vegan, Cruelty Free + Halal

Inika is a popular Australian natural makeup brand that’s been on the green scene since 2006.  The entire line is mineral-based and certified cruelty free, vegan, and halal. Many products also hold Organic Food Chain Australia certification, indicating that they contain a minimum of 70% certified organic ingredients.  I’ve been testing out the Light Trial Pack, which includes samples sizes of the Inika’s most popular base products (in shades suitable for light skin), and I want to share my thoughts on those items, along with a a couple other Inika products I’ve been using for quite some time.

Certified Organic Pure Primer
I’m not a big face primer user and the Pure Primer hasn’t radically changed my mind.  A hydrating primer made with hyaluronic acid and organic oils, it moisturizes and does create a nice base for makeup, but, much like the Nude by Nature primer I reviewed in the spring, I don’t notice it doing anything more than my regular skincare, so, for me, it seems like an unnecessary extra step.  If you’re someone that enjoys a hydrating primer under makeup, I expect the Pure Primer would be a bigger hit. I’ve dabbled with using it as an under eye primer and I do like it for that purpose.  The extra moisture the primer provides helps concealer blend out a little easier, especially if some time has passed between applying eye cream and doing my makeup.

New at the Drugstore: Nude By Nature

I’ve always advocated for more accessible natural products, so as soon as I heard that Nude By Nature, a well-known Australian natural mineral makeup line, was launching exclusively in Shoppers Drug Mart this year, I was pretty excited.  Up to this point, our only widespread healthy “drugstore” makeup options in Canada have been Burt’s Bees and a select few Physician’s Formula Organic Wear products, so this is a huge step forward. Nude by Nature markets itself as high performing natural formulas free from synthetics, silicones, talc, and parabens.  The entire line is 100% naturally derived.

I’ve been trying out four products over the last several months -- three purchased by me and one that I received free from ChickAdvisor -- and I’m excited to share my thoughts on this new Canadian launch.  Keep reading for my take on everything...

Perfecting Primer ($32 for 1oz)
I don't typically use a face primer, so if I hadn't received this mini from ChickAdvisor, I doubt I would have tried it on my own.  The Perfecting Primer is silicone-free and has a similar consistency to a light lotion or moisturizer. It's invisible on the skin and creates a good, hydrated base for makeup application, but I haven't found it does anything more than my normal skincare routine.  I did a side-by-side comparison one day with the primer on one half of my face and just my regular skincare on the other and both sides looked and wore exactly the same throughout the day. Without the silicones, the primer doesn't do any intense pore-filling or smoothing and I haven't found it prolongs the wear of my makeup either. I don't think it's a bad product, but, for me, it just feels like an unnecessary extra step. I've also read a lot of comments about the primer's strong fragrance, but I've noticed very little scent at all.

Perfecting Concealer ($24 for 0.2oz)
Dark under eye circles are one of my biggest skin woes, so I’m always up for trying concealers that promise lightweight and luminous coverage.  The Perfecting Concealer is a squeeze tube liquid concealer that checks both those boxes, but I have somewhat mixed feelings about it on the whole. Overall, I like it a lot. Coverage is fantastic and it does a great job brightening the under eye area without looking heavy or cakey.  I’ve also used the concealer to cover blemishes and redness and it works well for those purposes too.

Sample Stash #20: Deluxe Mini Edition

It’s been a long time since my last sample stash post, but I’ve been using a fair number of minis recently, so it seemed like a good time to bring the series back.  There’s only so much information you can gain from a small sample sachet, but deluxe samples and trial size minis can give you a great impression of a product without a big commitment.

When I first received the Purity Skin Tonic (in my October Goodbeing Box), I disliked the scent enough that I could barely bring myself to try it, but six months later, either the scent has mellowed or my nose has, as it’s no longer an issue.  I still get a hint of pool water, but it’s not acrid or offensive, and the product now smells mainly fresh and a little herbal/minty. It works incredibly well on my skin too! The tonic combines soothing, anti-inflammatory, and clarifying ingredients and I notice my skin is smoother and my pores look a little more refined since using it regularly.  It’s safe to say that Good Medicine Beauty Lab is firmly back on my wishlist and I’ll certainly consider a full size of Purity once I’m done with the mini.

Andalou Naturals Probiotic + C Renewal Cream
I’ve written about how disappointing some of Andalou’s reformulations have been for me, and unfortunately this is another product to add to that list.  The old version of the Probiotic + C Renewal Cream was one of my favorite moisturizers -- I’ve gone through at least two or three full pots of it -- so when I needed a new moisturizer, I thought I’d give the new incarnation a try.  In terms of scent and feel, the two are very similar, however the ingredients have changed considerably and so has the effect of the new cream on my skin. One of the most significant changes is that sunflower oil, which used to be the second ingredient, is now lumped in at the end, amongst small percent ingredients like hyaluronic acid and calendula extract.  The new formula uses a higher amount of glycerin and lists its first oil, jojoba, as the fifth ingredient. Ultimately, the new version left me with minor congestion on my cheeks and seemed to have my skin producing more oil throughout the day. Definitely not something I’ll be purchasing again.

CLOVE + HALLOW: A Trio of Fantastic Lip Products

CLOVE + HALLOW burst onto the green beauty scene last year and I’ve been swooning over their gorgeous products and classy branding ever since.  I had the opportunity to test out some of the company’s best selling lip items recently and I’m excited to share my thoughts on everything. (Spoiler: they’re all pretty amazing!)

Brand Background

CLOVE + HALLOW was founded by professional makeup artist Sarah Biggers after her own health challenges convinced her to eliminate conventional makeup and personal care products in lieu of healthier, clean alternatives.  When she ultimately wasn’t able to find makeup products or shade ranges that she was completely happy with, the idea for CLOVE + HALLOW was born. As the brand's website states, “Clove + Hallow was founded to marry clean cosmetics with the swoon-worthy aesthetic, performance, and shade range of your favorite conventional brands at a price-point that doesn’t cause sticker shock.”  What more can you ask for? The line is 100% cruelty-free and vegan and combines natural ingredients with minimal safe and well-researched synthetics. [Find out more about C + H’s Clean15 formulation and ingredient guarantee HERE.]

Let's get right into the products…

Angelic Lip Glaze
The lip glazes are non-sticky lip glosses that pack a pretty serious amount of pigment.  The glosses come in a twist-up pen with a brush applicator and are rich, creamy, and moisturizing.  The formula is thicker and more substantial than many glosses and, as such, the color lasts longer on the lips -- I get a good three hours before I need to think about reapplying.  The lip glazes also offer moderate shine -- they're not the shiniest gloss out there, but nothing to scoff at in that regard either.

A Year of Empties {Part #4: Makeup}

Makeup is always the tiniest of empties categories, but since I've been collecting these for so long, I've actually accumulated a fair number of products to share!

BASE
I’m a big fan of Everyday Minerals's mineral foundations and the Matte Base in Ivory (1N) has been my go-to since last summer.  I'm working through a second jar now.  I also used up a mini jar of the The All Natural Face Mineral Foundation in Porcelain Kissed By Honey.  Also a solid product, though probably not something I'll buy again since there are other mineral foundations that I prefer.

The Ecco Bella FlowerColor Face Powder in Fair is my favorite powder for setting liquid or cream makeup.  It offers little in the way of coverage, but has a beautiful, natural finish.  Definitely something I intend to re-buy in the future.  The Honeybee Gardens Pressed Mineral Powder in Geisha is another good one -- medium coverage and super quick to buff onto the skin.  I think the ingredients have changed since the last time I purchased it, so I'll have to check into that before I buy it again.

I also tried samples of several liquid bases.  I had similar issues with the Pure Anada Tinted Moisturizer in Porcelain and Smooth & Conceal Liquid Foundation in Arctic Alabaster as I did with their moisturizers -- they sat on top of my skin and, as such, didn't look natural.   The Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue in Opal is a well-loved product, but I found it a little dark and a lot too luminous.  I'm all for glowy skin, but this crossed the line into oily for me.  I also wasn't wowed by the 14e Cosmetics Aloe Nourish Sheer Tint in Birch (1.5).  I don't remember there being anything wrong with it per say, but I didn't like it enough to pick up a full size.

MASCARA
The Pacifica Stellar Gaze Supernova Mascara, which I used two tubes of, has become my new go-to mascara.  It's good and black, non-irritating to my sensitive eyes, and reasonably water resistant.  The other two were total flops: the Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Work It!, because it was practically invisible and still managed to smear all over my glasses despite stay-put claims to the contrary, and the BareMinerals Lash Domination Mascara, because while it looked and wore fine, it also seemed to make my lashes considerably more sparse during the two or so months that I used it.  Ingredients leave a little to be desired in the Bare Minerals too.

EYELINER
You wouldn't think brown pencil liner would be something to be picky about, but there you have it -- there's actually quite a bit of variation across brands! The Lily Lolo Brown Eye Liner Pencil, a dark brown with a creamy formula, is a definite favorite.  The Pacifica Fringe Natural Eye Pencil was a little too light and warm-toned for my liking -- disappointing because the black from the same line is one of my favorites.  The Honeybee Gardens Smoking Gun JobaColors Eye Liner is the most beautiful metallic cool taupe shade, but I'm not too impressed with the new ingredients since these were reformulated (and renamed), so it’s not one I’ll be replacing in my collection.

EYE SHADOW + EYE SHADOW PRIMER
The Lavera Eye Shadow Base was just okay.  It worked well at preventing creasing, but I found that colors tended to mash together over it, so it’s not ideal for more complex eye looks. I also finished a couple no longer available indie eye shadows: Shiro Cosmetics Baker’s Boy, a beautiful shimmery gold, and Detrivore Cosmetics Contamination, a perfect warm matte medium brown. I love wearing colors like this blended out in the crease.

LIPS
Clearly I use a lot of lip balm! The Crazy Rumors Raspberry Sherbet Lip Balm and Wedderspoon Peppermint Lipcare are two great ones that I've bought many times over.  The Epic Blend Hemp Mint Lip Balm and Eco Lips Apricot Peach POGO Lip Balm were also good, although the shape and sturdiness of the latter left a little to be desired.  I used up one tinted balm: the Everyday Minerals Tinted Lip Balm in a mystery color (the label's worn off), which was the most perfect mauvey-nude.  My one gripe with Everyday Minerals is how frequently they discontinued their color products, which was the case with this one. There's a new incarnation of the tinted lip balms, but nothing that looks very similar color-wise.

I didn't finish the Eco Lips Peppermint Mongo Kiss Lip Balm, but I'm tossing it because I had a reaction every time I used it.  The only ingredient that was new to me was the mongongo oil, so I'll definitely be proceeding with caution with any other mongongo oil-containing products!  I'm also finally chucking out my Vapour Elixir Lip Glosses in Enigma and Twinkle.  I loved these glosses, but they've been long discontinued so it's well past time I got rid of them.  I'm not sure how Vapour’s doefoot glosses compare, but they're on my to-try list!

BLUSH/MISCELLANEOUS

The Silk Naturals Lovelace Sheer Blush was one of my first blushes and it’s one I loved right to its very end.  The Sheer Blush formula offers medium pigmentation and blends like a dream, and Lovelace, which is advertised as a dupe for Nars Deepthroat, is a beautiful shimmery peach.  I've got a new jar sitting pretty in my cart for my next Silk Naturals order.  I also sampled a few Everyday Minerals products: Berry Berry Luminous Blush, which I loved but which was no longer available by the time I got through the sample, Let's Pink About This Luminous Blush, which was just okay, and the Peach and Yellow Primers, both of which I like using to set or prime under eye concealer. I have a larger size of the Yellow Primer that I'm currently using. I also used at least one pack of the Blum Naturals Oil Absorbing Facial Tissues, basic blotting papers that I keep in my purse for midday touchups.
And that's a wrap on this batch of empties -- I'm so happy to finally chuck all these out!
