Flower and Spice: Luxury Modern Apothecary Skincare

If ever I was overdue to talk about a product or company, it's this duo from Flower and Spice.  I started doing some (non-blogging) work for Flower and Spice last summer and Karmen, the company's founder and formulator, kindly sent me a Discovery Set to try out at that time.  The Discovery Set retails for €69.00 and includes smaller sizes of Flower and Spice's two best-selling products: the Midnight Beauty Rich Revitalizing Serum and the Soothe and Repair Daily Moisturizer.

Flower and Spice was created when Karmen decided to leave the stressful world of fashion, video production, and marketing in lieu of applying her longtime passions for green living, cooking, and flowers, herbs, and spices to creating a natural skincare line.  Karmen studied organic skincare science at Formula Botanica and Flower and Spice was born!

Flower and Spice's products were formulated by Karmen in the Netherlands, but are currently produced in a leading natural skincare lab in Switzerland.  The entire line is 100% natural and all products are free of nasty ingredients, animal testing, genetic engineering, and nanotechnology.

Before jumping into things further, I do want to stress that I've mulled over how to best approach this review -- or even to do it at all -- since I have an extra connection to the company, but after using the products on and off for several months, I really do want to share my thoughts on them.  I was not asked to write this and, as always, all opinions are honest and my own.

Lightweight, Skin-Quenching Hydration with One Love Organics Skin Dew

One Love Organics, to me, is one of the long haul, OG natural skincare brands.  They’ve been around for years, but they continue to innovate and create new and fantastic products all the time.  I’d had my eye on the Skin Dew Coconut Water Cream ever since it launched in 2016, so when I saw it as one of two featured products in the April Art of Organics box -- selling for less than the cream's retail price alone -- I was quick to grab it.

Skin Dew ($58 USD for 2.1oz) is an EcoCert certified organic lightweight moisturizer made with more than 50% pure organic coconut water.  In addition to hydration, coconut water offers a high mineral, amino acid, enzyme, and antioxidant content to nourish skin.  It does not have the same comedogenic properties as coconut oil, so even those sensitive to the oil -- myself included -- can often benefit from products containing coconut water or juice.

The cream also contains:

Cupuacu butter, rich in polyphenols to condition skin.

Sunflower, acacia, watermelon seed, and jojoba oils for lightweight, protective, sebum-balancing moisture and defense against environmental stresses.

Phytic acid sourced from rice to reduce dryness and help soften the appearance of fine lines.

Life-Flo Skincare Mists: NaPCA + Thermal Spring Water

For me, winter skincare is all about building and layering moisture.  From a non-drying cleanser to a moisturizing toner, hydrating serum, moisturizer, and/or oil, they all do their part in keeping skin happy and healthy through the cold months. Today I want to focus on two mists from Life-Flo.  Life-Flo is a wellness brand with an extensive array of products, including skin, body, and hair care.  I’ve been trialing the Thermal Spring Water Spray and NaPCA Mist over the last couple months and I’m excited to share my thoughts...

NaPCA Mist
NaPCA, also known as sodium PCA or sodium pyroglutamic acid, is a water soluble potassium salt that acts as a humectant.  Like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, it attracts moisture and can hold onto several times its weight in water, helping to prevent moisture loss in the skin.  It’s something that our skin naturally contains and is an important component of the skin’s protective acid mantle, but since levels deplete as we age, it’s a good hydrating ingredient to seek out in skincare products.

In addition to sodium PCA, the Life-Flo NaPCA Mist contains aloe vera, glycerin, and cucumber extract, making it a great lightweight and hydrating boost for the skin.  It’s unscented and very gentle, and I definitely notice hydrating benefits.  I mainly use the mist as the toner step in my routine, spraying it onto my hands and gently pressing into my skin. The mister is not as fine as I would like it to be for use over makeup or as a skin refresher throughout the day, but if you transferred the product to a better bottle, it would likely work great for that as well.

I bought the mist mainly for my face, but since it's marketed for "face, body, and hair,” you know I had to try it for those too!  I like it on the body, particularly under a weightier oil or cream, as, just like on the face, it quickly adds a light watery layer of moisture that the next product can seal in.  For hair, it does a good job moistening and refreshing curls, and I appreciate that it doesn’t add any oil or greasy feel, but I also found it has a tendency to make hair more prone to tangling, so it's not a product I reach for much for my hair.

Thermal Spring Water Spray
Thermal water is basically water that originates from underground hot springs.  It starts out deep underground and is heated by geothermal activity as it passes through the Earth’s crust and various layers of earth to reach the surface.  Along the way, it absorbs dissolved minerals and, because it generally hasn't been exposed to surface elements, is purported to contain less bacteria and pollution than ordinary water.  Thermal water is a big trend with a lot of French skincare brands and I came upon the Life-Flo version when looking for a cruelty-free option.  Unlike the others which are packaged in aerosol cans, the Life-Flo comes in a more traditional spray bottle.  Again, the mist isn’t super fine, but it does the trick.  Life-Flo's thermal water is extracted from the Zechstein salt layers in Europe, at a depth of 1600 meters, and contains, among other minerals, magnesium and calcium.

I like to keep a spray bottle of plain water around to help face oils and serums spread and absorb, and I feel like the Thermal Spring Water just takes that one step further.  I haven't noticed a big tangible difference in my skin, but it feels nice and cooling and seems to leave skin a little softer than ordinary water. I'm not sure it's something I'll continue to buy, but I admit, I do like the idea of using something with potentially more skin benefits than plain water.

The Bottom Line
Life-Flo's Thermal Spring Water Spray and NaPCA Mist are two good and inexpensive skincare mists.  The NaPCA Mist is a fantastic hydrating spray, perfect for layering extra moisture, particularly for dry or winter-weary skin.  It's a little harder to pinpoint the effects of the Thermal Spring Water Spray, but if you’re looking for a cruelty-free thermal water, it’s a great option to consider.

Consonant Skincare 100% Natural Skin Renewal Kit

Happy New Year!  2017 was not a great year for content here on Naturalla Beauty, but I want to do better in 2018.  As you may know, last spring I switched from mainly freelancing to working full-time again and I currently work two jobs for a combined total of six days most weeks -- not including the freelance work I still do on the side.  I don’t think I ever gave enough credit to bloggers that also work full-time, but really, there’s just not a lot of hours left in the day after full-time work + a commute!  Nonetheless, despite a still-hectic schedule, I’ve missed blogging and I want to make a point to do more this year.  I’ve got lots of great content planned and I’m hoping to set up a more regular routine.

And, that starts today.  I was pretty restrained on Black Friday, but my one spur of the moment impulse buy was the 100% Natural Skin Renewal Kit from Consonant Skincare.  Consonant is a Toronto-based company that makes natural, high-performance skincare.  The brand takes a scientific approach to formulating and creates healthy products without synthetic ingredients or skin irritants.  Most products are unscented and everything is designed to function in harmony with the skin’s natural chemistry.

The Skin Renewal Kit was a limited edition set for the holidays and included small sizes of the brand new Maximum Glycolic Meta Serum, the award-winning, cult favorite, HydrExtreme Extreme Hydration Booster, and one of two moisturizers: the Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream or the Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream for Dry Skin.  The kit is currently sold out, but the products can be purchased individually, both directly from Consonant and on Well.ca.

Let’s get right to the review!  Here are my full thoughts after using these three products for the last month.

Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream
I picked the lighter of the two moisturizers because I was more drawn to the ‘active’ ingredients in this one, but, considering it’s winter, I might have actually done better with the dry skin option.  The Ultra Moisturizing Face Cream is a lightweight moisturizer made with grapeseed, olive, and avocado oils, plus niacinamide and tea tree oil which target blemishes, uneven skin, and enlarged pores.  The formula also contains cassia angustifolia seed extract, the star hydrating ingredient in Consonant’s HydrExtreme booster (more on that shortly!)

The ingredients are fabulous, but it’s a light product, and, on its own, I don’t feel like the Ulta Moisturizing Face Cream offers enough moisture for my skin this time of year.  I do, however, like it as a base for cocktailing skincare.  Most often, I’ve been mixing in a drop or two of a face oil or blending in some HydrExtreme for adding moisture and/or hydration.  I feel like the cream alone would do the trick for me in the summer, when my skin typically need lighter products, so I may end up saving the rest until the weather warms up in a few months.

HydrExtreme Extreme Hydration Booster
HydrExtreme is a hydration booster that regularly garners raves from bloggers and traditional media alike, and it’s a product I’ve been curious to try for years.  Made with just two ingredients, cassia angustifolia seed extract and vegetable glycerin, HydrExtreme is a hydrating serum that’s been found in independent double blind studies to outperform traditional hyaluronic acid formulations.

Cassia angustifolia, or senna, is best known for its use as a laxative, but it also has skin conditioning benefits and anti-inflammatory properties, and offers improved skin hydration, moisture and suppleness.  Glycerin is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts and binds to water, helping skin draw in and hold onto moisture.

HydrExtreme has a thin, watery consistency.  It can be applied on its own, layered under other products, or mixed into a cream moisturizer. The last way has been my favorite method of using the booster.  It’s hard to get a single drop of liquid to spread across your entire face, but that’s all that I’ve found my skin really needs, so mixing it into a cream is a great way to make the most of the product -- and to conserve this 4 ml baby size and help it to last me a little longer!

At $72 for 10 ml / $149 for 30 ml, HydrExtreme is Consonant’s most expensive product, but it works very well, lives up to its claims, and, unless your skin is ultra, ultra dry, you don’t need a lot.  Like I said, I only add one drop into my moisturizer, once a day, and I’ve seen a noticeable difference in both the hydration and plumpness of my skin, so a little really does go a long way.

Maximum Glycolic Meta Serum
The Maximum Glycolic Meta Serum is a new product to Consonant’s range, launched just last month, and is the item that I was most excited to test out.  The serum is made with the maximum allowable concentration of AHA’s -- thus the name -- to exfoliate and break down dead skin cells, and it also contains soothing botanical extracts and hydrating sodium PCA and niacinamide to counter any harshness from the acids, minimize irritation, and prevent dryness.

I’ve never used a glycolic acid product before, so I cautiously started out using the serum only twice a week and have gradually worked up to nightly use.  The Glycolic Meta Serum is considerably thicker than the HydrExtreme and has more of a gel consistency.  It applies smoothly, absorbs quickly, and is very gentle.  I’ve had zero irritation, tingling, or burning, all of which I’ve experienced with other acid products in the past.  I didn’t see a lot of results immediately, with more infrequent use, but by the time I worked up to every other night, and later every night, I could see a tangible difference.  My skin is more even and it's incredibly soft to the touch, with very little texture remaining at all.  The serum has also left my pores looking cleaner, and thereby smaller and less visible.

(L to R) Ultra Moisturizing Face Cream, Maximum Glycolic Meta Serum, HydrExtreme
The Bottom Line
The kit was a great way to try multiple products and I’m really glad I picked it up!  The moisturizer hasn’t blow me away -- although that might be different in the summer -- but both the Hydrextreme Hydration Booster and the Maximum Glycolic Meta Serum are products I’d consider purchasing in full size once I use up these minis.

Have you used anything from Consonant?  What are your favorites?  (Me, I’ve got my eye on trying The Perfect Sunscreen and DHE Mask next!)

Niora Naturals Alpha Clear Adult Acne Treatment (Alpha Clear Cleanser + Exfoliant)

My skin isn't very acne-prone anymore, as many of you will already know, so I don't usually review acne products, but I made an exception for Niora Naturals, an affordable adult acne line whose products rely on fruit-based alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's) to simultaneously target anti-aging concerns and clear acne.  Used at low levels, these fruit acids are gentle and great for balancing oil production, exfoliating away buildup and dead skin cells, improving skin texture, and fading scars and age spots.

Niora very generously sent me their entire range of Adult Acne products, but for today's post, I want to focus on the two products that have really stood out to me: the Alpha Clear Cleanser and Alpha Clear Exfoliant.  These two are at the center of Niora's line and together they make up the company's two-step acne treatment system.

Alpha Clear Cleanser
Described as a "moisturizing cleanser for adult acne," the Alpha Clear Cleanser is a creamy cleanser, boosted with AHA's.  My skin leans a little dry this time of year and I wouldn't say I find the cleanser particularly moisturizing, but it isn't drying either.  My favorite thing about it is its light emollient texture that has great slip on the skin and rinses away cleanly.  Niora avoids both chemical emulsifiers and emulsifying waxes, and instead uses lecithin phospholipids, creating a light-textured emulsion that won't clog pores or leave behind any kind of waxy film or coating.  On my skin, the cleanser feels a little too potent for everyday use, but I've enjoyed adding it into my routine as more of a treatment cleanser every two or three days.

All the Niora products have a mild scent that I can't quite put my finger on.  The cleanser contains ylang ylang and orange essential oils, but all I smell - across the entire range - is a somewhat nondescript, almost sunscreeny scent.  Keep in mind that my nose is extra sensitive and while it's not my favorite scent, it's not offensive either.

Alpha Clear Exfoliant
The Alpha Clear Exfoliant is my number one pick from Niora's line.  It's basically an exfoliating toner - something hard to come by in the green beauty world - that works to gently resurface the skin.  By flushing out pores and exfoliating dead skin and debris, it works to create an environment less conducive to acne and breakouts.  The AHA's also trigger increased cell turnover, helping to reduce wrinkles and fine lines and speed up the fading of scars and age spots.  I've definitely noticed that my pores stay cleaner - and therefore look smaller - since incorporating this product into my routine.

The fruit acids are well balanced in a base of aloe vera and glycerin and the exfoliant feels quite gentle on the skin.  I noticed some tingling when I first started using it, but my skin got used to it within a few days and I haven't experienced any sensitivity since.  That said, I do prefer to use it just once a day - usually at night - rather than the twice daily recommended by the company.

The Bottom Line
I don't love how they smell, but I'm impressed with everything else about Niora Natural's Adult Acne Treatment system.  Whether you struggle with acne or are looking for AHA products for more anti-aging purposes, Niora is a great line to look into.  The products are well formulated with low levels of acids, and further gentled with soothing and nourishing ingredients like aloe and jojoba oil, making them suitable for even sensitive skin, though perhaps with less frequent application (ie. once daily rather than twice), as I've found myself doing.

Have you tried Niora Naturals?  What are your favorite products for fighting acne + breakouts?

Skincare Routine Part #2: Evening Skincare

Where my morning skincare is all about quick and easy products, night is when I like to invest a little more time in my skin.  Just a few years ago, skincare felt like a chore, but these days, I really enjoy the whole process.  One of the biggest changes I've made - and one I'd recommend if you struggle at all with nighttime skincare - is doing the majority of your routine earlier in the evening.  For me, sometimes that means as early as six or seven at night, but at a minimum, it's a couple hours before bed.  The benefits are twofold: if you're using heavier products that take time to sink in, you're less likely to lose them on your pillowcase, and you're also less apt to go to sleep without washing your face due to sheer exhaustion.

In terms of products, the skin does a lot of regenerating when we sleep, so I like to use products with nourishing, reparative ingredients that aid in those processes.  Here's my current lineup:

Badger Seabuckthorn Face Cleansing Oil* / Weleda Soothing Almond Facial Oil*
My favorite way of removing makeup is with an oil, since I've not found anything else as effective at breaking everything down.  I take a couple minutes to thoroughly massage it onto my dry face and then wipe it away with a warm, damp facecloth.  I love the clean, fresh feeling Badger's Seabuckthorn Cleansing Oil gives my face, but because the menthol in it sometimes irritates my eyes, I prefer to use a separate oil to remove eye makeup.  Usually I'd just use almond or jojoba oil, but since running out of all my plain oils, I've been using the Weleda Soothing Almond Facial Oil.  It's a gentle blend of almond and plum kernel oils with blackthorn extract and it works just as well to remove makeup as it does to soothe and moisturize the skin.

Andalou Naturals Citrus Kombucha Cleansing Gel
I like to follow the oil cleansing step with a gel cleanser.  The Citrus Kombucha Cleansing Gel is part of Andalou's Clarifying line for oily and acne prone skin, but it also works well on my normal and generally non-acne prone skin.  The smell reminds me of cutting into a fresh grapefruit, and although the cleanser foams up a moderate amount, it doesn't dry out my face.

On days when I'm not wearing makeup, I skip the oil cleanse and just use either the Cleansing Gel or Andalou's Apricot Probiotic Cleansing Milk, which I talked about in my morning skincare routine.

Nonie of Beverly Hills AHA! Skin Tonic*
Toners aren't a skincare item that really gets me excited, but I do like the AHA! Skin Tonic, which is one of the few products I use both morning and night.  It's gentle and non-drying and I've noticed a visible difference in the appearance of the pores on my nose and cheeks since adding this into my routine.

Nonie of Beverly Hills AHA! Brilliant Moisturizer*
With 5% alpha hydroxy acids from natural fruit sources, Brilliant serves as both a moisturizer and a gentle chemical exfoliant.  In the beginning, I experienced minor tingling from the acids, but after using it on and off for several months, my skin has gotten more used to it and I don't feel anything on application.  This is a great formula because while the acids are pretty gentle, they are still quite effective at resurfacing the skin.  I haven't noticed much difference in terms of fine lines, but my overall skin texture has improved and my skin is the softest I can remember it being in a long time.

Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream / Holiskin Revitalize Eye Serum*
Like I mentioned, I like to do bulk of my nighttime skincare a couple hours before bed, at which point I'll use the Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream.  I find, no matter how conservatively I apply them, eye oils always manage to seep into my eyes if given the time, so I wait to apply the Revitalize Eye Serum until right before going to sleep.  Holiskin's serum is a light-textured blend of organic apricot kernel, camellia, rosehip seed, and evening primrose oils, plus non-GMO vitamin E, organic calendula extract, and essential oils.  I haven't been using it long enough to remark on its effect on dark circles or fine lines, but it feels very nourishing and does a great job moisturizing the eye area.  I'll update once I've used it for longer.

Rachel's Plan Bee Facial Oil*
Similar to in the morning, I haven't been using face oils every night recently, but on nights when I want a little extra moisture, I'll add in a few drops of Rachel's Plan Bee Facial Oil.  The oil, which smells like a warm vanilla cookie, has just enough weight to it to thoroughly moisturize the skin without any heaviness or greasy feeling.  It works well either applied alone as an additional step or mixed into my moisturizer.

And there you have it!  I've got one more post coming with masks, treatments and occasional products, but day-to-day, this is what I use.  What are your favorite nighttime skincare products?

Osmia Organics Active Gel Nutrient Serum

Makeup has been a favorite of mine for quite some time, but it's only in the last six months or so that I've become more interested in skincare.  It's amazing how much of a difference a slightly more involved routine can make!  A couple months ago, I won an Osmia Organics lip gloss in a Facebook giveaway and Sarah, Osmia's owner/formulator, kindly included a sample of the Active Gel Nutrient Serum as well.

"This gentle face serum provides an extra layer of soothing moisture, with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to help maintain intracellular water in the skin cells.  White tea and aloe comfort the skin, and rice protein acts to smooth and support the collagen structure of the skin.  This gel serum is meant to be used as a middle layer, between washing and applying a moisturizer or an oil serum.  Think of it as a multivitamin for your face."

Osmia recommends applying the serum to moist skin, so after cleansing, I mist my face with George's Aloe and make sure to rub the serum in while my skin is damp.  It absorbs quickly and unlike a lot of other gel serums, it leaves no film or tacky feeling on your skin.  I prefer my morning skincare to be quick and with fewer steps, so I usually only use the serum at night, but it does work well under makeup too, should you want to use it during the day.

The first night I used it, I did a double take over how much more plumped and firm my skin felt only a few minutes after application.  At 25, I think I still have fairly young skin, but I can't remember my skin ever feeling as firm, plump, and lifted as it's become since I started using this product.  In the beginning, this feeling would last until the morning and then my skin would seem back to normal, but once I hit about the 3 week mark, I noticed that my skin seemed to be retaining the extra moisture better and feels this way all day long.

The serum is also fantastic for fine lines.  Some of you may recall my struggle with the two small lines between my eyebrows, and Osmia's serum has made a real difference with them.  I've tried a few different products in the hopes of targeting this area, and this is the first one that's given real, visible results.  I know hyaluronic acid can sometimes reduce the appearance of lines just by plumping the surrounding area, but I think it goes beyond that, as the lines definitely seem shallower and less pronounced, even up to 24 hours after using the serum.  Makeup also sits better on this area and I've had less problems with it settling into the lines throughout the day.

I've been using the sample once a day for about a month and I've still got a little left.  A full size retails for $55, and considering how potent the serum is and how far the sample alone has gone, it's something I do think I'll be purchasing in the future.  I'm so impressed with the results I've gotten from this product!  Osmia's Active Gel Nutrient Serum is a light serum that's equal parts gentle and effective, and I think it would suit a lot of different skin types.

Ingredients: aloe barbadensis leaf juice*, glycerin*, camellia sinensis (white tea) extract*, calendula officinalis extract*, hydrolyzed rice protein, oat beta glucan, leuconostoc/arundinaria gigantea ferment filtrate, niacinamide (vitamin B3), sclerotium rolfsii gum, hydrolyzed oats, hyaluronic acid, proprietary blend of essential oils*.
