Curly Girl Reviews: (Mostly) Protein-Free Conditioners + Styling Products

It's been pretty well established that healthy hair needs the right balance of moisture and protein, and that messing with the equilibrium by overdoing either one can cause problems. That's why, after years of what seemed like excessive hair breakage, I decided to try a protein detox this spring/summer to determine once and for all if protein overload was the cause of my sometimes brittle hair. Essentially, I eliminated any hair products with protein -- it's harder than you might think with all the hydrolyzed grains and other protein sources that can hide in an ingredient list! -- to see if that would resolve my issue.

As it turns out, I wasn’t fully protein-free for as long as I originally thought, as one of these products does contain a small amount of protein, but I did still do a proper detox for close to four months.  My hair routine was already silicone-free, and that’s also true of these five items.

A European Hand Cream Edit ft. Aurelia, Benecos, Alva + Lavera

There are few things I love as much as a good hand cream, and while I’ve found some solid favourites over the years, the product junkie in me is always up for seeing what’s out there and trying new things.  I’ve been testing out several new-to-me hand creams over the last few months and, while none of them have quite overtaken my longtime favorite -- the Trilogy Ultra Hydrating Hand Cream -- I have discovered some good ones, including a new lightweight favourite that’s perfect for the warmer months or for those times when you just don’t need as intense of a lotion.

Keep reading for a full breakdown on the six European hand creams I’ve been experimenting with recently...

Alva Hand Cream + Sea Buckthorn Hand Cream
These two hand creams are my first products from German-made Alva and I like them both a lot. The richer Sea Buckthorn formula is my favorite of the two, mainly for its fresh lemony scent, but also because, made with shea and cocoa butters, it feels a little more nourishing.  The original hand cream smells mostly like tea tree oil to me, with just a hint of citrus coming through underneath.  Both creams moisturize very well and absorb reasonably quickly too.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare Aromatic Repair & Brighten Hand Cream
The Aromatic Repair & Brighten Hand Cream promises to hydrate and nourish skin while helping diminish dark spots and pigmentation.  I don’t have dark spots or pigmentation on my hands so I can’t speak to those claims, but as a moisturizing product, it’s pretty fantastic.  The hand cream is thick but not heavy, and feels very healing on dry, dehydrated, or chapped skin. It’s also great on dry cuticles.  The cream isn’t oily or greasy, but it does take a minute or two to fully sink in. The scent -- a blend of vetiver, ylang ylang, lavender, patchouli, bergamot, juniper, rosemary, and lemon -- is herbal, floral and just generally lovely.  This is definitely one of the more strongly fragranced natural hand creams I’ve used and the scent does linger on the skin. At £28/$52 USD for 75 ml, it's a pricey hand cream, but if you have the money and want to splurge, it's a beautiful product.

Disappointing Products #4

How do you feel about less-than-stellar reviews?  It seems like there's an ongoing debate amongst bloggers as to whether or not one should share less favorable opinions of products or just stick to talking about the things we love.  Negative reviews aren't nearly as fun to write, it's true, but I've always felt it was important to share less glowing opinions as well, which is why I do these Disappointing Products posts every so often.

As always, this isn't intended to bash any of these brands - most of whom actually make other products I love - only to share why these particular items haven't worked for me.

Nubian Heritage EVOO & Moringa Repair & Extend Shine Gel
I actually included this in my last disappointing products post (oops!) but I forgot I'd ever written about it when I gathered up this latest batch to photograph.  Clearly I've held onto it for way too long at this point!  To reiterate that first post, the gel itself actually performed really well the few times I used it, but I struggle with the scent.  It's strong and perfumey, and lasts all day in my hair.  The ingredients list only a "proprietary essential oil blend," and while it may only be essential oils, the scent is quite reminiscent of synthetic fragrance and isn't something I can tolerate.  I haven't tried anything else from Nubian Heritage, so I don't know if it's just this one product or the entire line, but I'd advise caution if you're someone sensitive to scents.  I can't find this exact product on the Nubian Heritage website anymore and it's out of stock from a lot of other retailers, so it may have been discontinued.

Benecos Natural Creamy Makeup
This foundation baffles me, as I just can't imagine how anyone could make it work.  It's a liquid foundation with a thick creamy consistency, but it sets almost as soon as it touches the skin, making it nearly impossible to work with.  Because of how quickly it dries, it's a struggle to spread or sheer out, and tends to look heavy and cakey.  It also has a sickly sweet honey-like scent and - something I didn't initially realize - contains talc.

Balanced Guru Antioxidant Masque
Balanced Guru's Calming Masque is one of my all-time favorite skincare items, but the Antioxidant Masque did not leave my skin happy.  The mask contains a blend of antioxidant-rich berries and spices, and it smells delicious: like cinnamon and cloves.  I've noticed a pattern recently whereby my skin doesn't do well with these warm spices in products that stay on the skin, and this mask - much like May Lindstrom's Problem Solver - left my skin red, hot, and burning.  I really do love Balanced Guru as a brand, so if you're usually okay with these spices, it might still be worth a try.

Everyday Minerals Soft Peach Color Corrector Stick
The color of this corrector/concealer is a fantastic pale peach, but unfortunately, it blends away to nothing.  There's virtually no coverage, even with multiple layers, and any brightening or color correcting properties are very minimal as well.  The ingredients are great and it's a hydrating formula, so I may give it one more try as a sheer foundation.

Juice Beauty Nutrient Moisturizer
This moisturizer is advertised as a nutrient-rich cream suitable for all skin types, but I found it way too heavy on my normal-to-dry skin, so I question if it would suit anyone other than the ultra-dry.  It never seemed to absorb and instead just sat on top of my skin.  As a result, it didn't work well under makeup, and even when used at night, I'd wake up with a film from the cream still on my face.  I also found my face got shiny/oily throughout the day while using it, which isn't something I normally deal with.

Have you used any of these products?  I'd love to know if you were similarly underwhelmed or if they worked differently for you!

February Empties / Products I've Used Up

It's that time again!  I didn't use up that much stuff this month, but I was able to finish off a couple products I'd been wanting to be rid of, so I'm happy about that.  I also used up some makeup and cleared out my open mascaras, which is always a good thing.  Here's a look at February's empties:

KYI Unscented Sweet Almond Softening Oil*   [Review]
I really like the entire KYI line and the Almond Softening Oil is no exception.  It's gentle, very hydrating, and more affordable than a lot of other comparable body oils.  The Unscented version is just almond oil, so I wouldn't go out of my way to re-buy it, but I do want to pick up more of the Chamomile Lavender - my favorite KYI scent - at some point.

Also, in case you missed it in the sidebar, you can save 10% off any KYI purchase with the code "NB10." Code is valid through the end of April.

La Mav Cranberry Bio Exfoliating Scrub*   [Review]
This is a great face scrub.  It does a good job exfoliating without ever feeling harsh or overly abrasive, and my skin always looked extra healthy and luminous after using it.  I like to try new scrubs - in fact, I don't know that I've ever bought the same one more than once - but I did really enjoy this one.

Earthbody Brighten Cleanser & Mask
I got this trial size in one of my first Petit Vour boxes and I think it's one of the best products they've included to date.  Described as a "superfruit enzyme powder," Brighten takes Moroccan rhassoul clay and elevates it to a higher level with thirteen different plant and fruit powders.  I never tried it as a cleanser, but I loved using it as a mask.  I can't justify buying another mask until I go through a few of the other ones I currently have, but I'll miss having this in rotation in the meantime.

Shiro Cosmetics Default Lip Balm
Default is the untinted version of Shiro's Intertubes.  I loved the (now discontinued) Intertube formula, so when Shiro released an untinted version a few years ago, I rushed to buy several of these pots.  Unfortunately, I never thought it worked as well in a pot.  Depending on the temperature in your home, it tends to be very solid, making it difficult to apply.  I also found the texture of these specific ones to be somewhat gritty and chunky, and although it was probably just crystallized shea butter, I didn't enjoy it.  All in all, even though the actual formula worked great on my lips, I'm not sorry to see the end of these.

Boo Bamboo Line Lifting Face Cream*   [Review]
I mentioned I was trying to use this up in last week's What I Do With Products I Don't Love post, so it shouldn't be too surprising that I'm happy to see the end of this cream.  I used most of the pot as a body moisturizer, and while I ended up actually enjoying it that way, I wouldn't buy it for that purpose alone.

Young Living Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier
I don't use much hand sanitizer, but I like to carry one in my bag for those "just in case" moments.  This is my favorite - and really the only one I buy - because I like the ingredients, the gel consistency and that it's non-sticky and doesn't smell like alcohol.  I also love how tiny and compact the bottle is.

Blissoma Pure Sensitive Skin Soothing Complex
Another of my favorite products to come in a Petit Vour box!  My skin went a little haywire towards the beginning of the winter and Pure is the product that calmed it down. Made without essential oils, fragrance, alcohol or other irritants, Pure instead contains shea butter, marshmallow root,  plantain, self heal and more, and is one of the most soothing moisturizers I've used.  Definitely a product I can see myself purchasing in full size in the future.

The All Natural Face Olive Squalane Oil
More costly squalane oils from Indie Lee and Peter Thomas Roth have garnered a lot of positive attention, so when I spotted this rollerball from The All Natural Face selling for a mere $5, I couldn't resist adding it to my most recent order.  As it turns out, it didn't do much for me.  From everything I've read, squalane is supposed to be non-greasy and quick to absorb, but I found the opposite with this - it felt heavy and just sat on top of my skin, never really soaking in.  I'm still curious how the more expensive squalane oils might compare, particularly the sugar cane-derived Peter Thomas Roth one, but this one was not a hit.

Honeybee Gardens Pressed Mineral Foundation in Geisha   [Review]
I think I've gone through four or five pans of this foundation in the last couple years and it's still one of my favorites.  I love how natural it looks on the skin, as well as how incredibly quick it is to buff on in the mornings.  It works great on its own, but can also be used to add an extra layer of coverage on top of cream or liquid products.  I've heard the foundation has been slightly reformulated, which is always a little concerning, but I've got one more pan I'd previously bought before I need to worry about that.

Pollen & Wax Apollo Cleansing Milk   [Review]
Another product I'm happy to be done with!  Apollo just didn't work for my skin in any way, shape or form.  I tried it as a daily cleanser, a weekly exfoliant, and even on my body, and it left me consistently underwhelmed.

Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Vanilla Candy Cane Soap (mini)   [Review]
This soap came in a holiday kit and I liked it a lot.  It lathered well, smelled great, and didn't dry out my skin.  The Vanilla Candy Cane scent isn't available right now, but I'd buy it again next Christmas.  I'm also curious to try other Rocky Mountain Soap scents.

Une Beauty Skin Glow Pencil in G02   [Review]
This pencil, topped with a little Silk Naturals Sleep in a Jar, has been my favorite under eye concealer combo for the last couple years, so I was pretty gutted when Une discontinued this product.  I had a brief happy dance moment when they re-released it (in the bigger stick I'd always longed for too!), quickly followed by more disappointment when I realized they didn't re-release this particular color.  I'm still on the hunt for a replacement, so if there are any great under eye concealers I need to try, please leave them in the comments!

Zuzu Luxe Onyx Mascara
My old standby, favorite mascara.  I love pretty much everything about this, but especially that it doesn't irritate my eyes or smudge.  I've somehow accumulated a ton of new mascaras to try, but I've bought too many tubes of this to count and I'm sure I'll go back to it again.

Lily Lolo Vegan Black Mascara*   [Review]
And, my new favorite mascara.  This gives impressive volume - the best of any natural mascara I've used - and I love it about as much as the Zuzu Luxe.  My only slight complaint is that the tube got used up/dried out pretty quickly.  I'm strict about tossing mascaras after three months - four tops - and I rarely have a mascara actually dry out or feel empty in that time, but the Lily Lolo started feeling dry and became harder to work with right around the two month mark.  It was still usable for a few more weeks, but not nearly as awesome as when it was fresh.  I just received a replacement tube in the February Petit Vour box (full write up on that box coming very soon!) and I'm sure, despite its shorter lifespan, that I'll buy it again in the future as well.

The black mascara is back in stock and I still have a Lily Lolo discount code, if you're wanting to try this or anything else from Lily Lolo - "naturallabeauty" will get you 20% off sitewide (US website only).

Benecos Just Black Multi-Effect Mascara
I had the weirdest experience with this mascara.  Every time I wore it and went outside in the sun, I'd see black spots.  Finally I connected the spots to this mascara, but it was pretty disconcerting before I figured out what was causing them!  I really don't understand it either, as the mascara itself wasn't anything special.  It didn't make my lashes significantly longer, darker, or thicker than any other mascara, so I don't understand why the Benecos was so much in my line of vision.  I only ended up using this a handful of times, and I haven't touched it since the summer, but it's completely dried out now, so it's got to go!

A Definitive Look at Natural Eye Liner Pencils

In the process of weeding through and decluttering my makeup, I realized I've accumulated a fair few eyeliner pencils these last couple of years and - aside from a few brief mentions - I've never written about them.  I rarely used to wear eyeliner, but these days, it's pretty standard for days that I wear makeup.  Pencil is by far the quickest and easiest liner for me to use and it's what I reach for most often.

Here's my opinions - good and bad - on the eight brands currently in my collection.  I've included some swatches at the end too, for anyone that might be interested in seeing how some of these colors stack up against one another.

The Top Picks

Pacifica Natural Eye Pencils
If I had to pick a number one favorite, this would be it.  The formula glides on effortlessly, both on the lid and in the waterline, and the three colors I've tried all have great color payoff.  Despite the marketing, I wouldn't consider these to be waterproof, but they do last all day on the lashline.  They also don't smear or bleed out of the waterline, although I usually only get 3-4 hours wear there before they start to fade.  Currently there are four neutral shades available, but I'm hoping for more fun colors in the future!

Honeybee Gardens JobaColors Eye Liner
The JobaColor liners fall in the middle in terms of creamyness, but their gorgeous shades bump them up to my top two.  My two favorites are Blue Jeans, a bright teal blue and Smoking Gun, a beautiful silvered brown/shimmery taupe.  The one exception to the awesomeness of these pencils is Jet Set - the black - which I'm not crazy about.  I definitely think there are better black eyeliners, but I'd recommend the rest of the colors wholeheartedly.

Middle of the Road

Benecos Natural Kajal Eyeliner
The formula on these is excellent.  They're creamy and apply very smoothly, but the actual colors - at least the two I have - tend to leave me feeling a bit let down.  Brown is a really warm brown with some almost orange tones, and Night Blue - which swatches as an amazing metallic navy - always ends up as more of a muddy grey/charcoal on my eyes.  There are a couple more colors I'm cautiously curious about, so I'll be sure to update this if/when I try more.

Earthlab Vegan Mineral Pencils
If you're looking for a liner that's easy to smudge out, Earthlab is a good choice.  I don't find Black to be the best true, deep black for lining the eyes, but it's excellent for smoking out as it still hangs onto a good amount of colour once blended.

Gabriel Color
I only have one liner from Gabriel Color, in Black, which is another that I find to be more of a grey/charcoal than a true black.  The actual pencil is a little on the firmer side, but as long as you warm it up on your hand, it's fine to work with.

Failed to Impress

ELF Mineral Eye Liner
As a retractable pencil sold for a mere $3, I was really excited to give the Mineral Eye Liners a try.  Unfortunately, the pencil is just way too hard and needs a lot of pressure to get any color payoff.  Metallic Purple was disappointing color-wise as well.  It's a plummy brown shade with a purple sheen, but the purple wears off super quickly, leaving you with just a rather ordinary brown.

Beauty Without Cruelty Eye Defining Pencil*
I love how cool-toned Soft Brown is, but, again, the formula is just way too hard and leaves me feeling as though I'm scraping my eyelid raw whenever I use it. I will say, swatching this again today, the ashy tones and firmer texture reminded me more of a brow pencil than a liner, so if the color happens to be a match for you, it might work great for that purpose.

LUVU Beauty Eye Liner Pencils
The same qualities that I love so much about LUVU's lip pencils make their eye pencils some of my least favorites.  They're very solid and almost waxy, which results in very little color payoff on the eye, unless you're using a good amount of pressure.  I do like the shimmery White for highlighting the inner corner, but it's basically useless for lining the waterline or as a regular eyeliner.

Blacks: (L to R) Luvu Beauty Black, Gabriel Color Black, Earthlab Black, Honeybee Gardens Jet Set, Pacifica Jet

Neutrals: (L to R) LUVU Beauty White, Pacifica Bare, Honeybee Gardens Brown Sugar, Benecos Brown, Honeybee Gardens Belgian Chocolate, Beauty Without Cruelty Soft Brown, Honeybee Gardens Smoking Gun

The Colors: (L to R) Honeybee Gardens Blue Jeans, Benecos Night Blue, ELF Metallic Purple

June Makeup Basket / Current Rotation

It's been pretty hot and humid here lately, which has made it a bit more of a struggle to keep makeup looking fresh all day long.  In deference to the heat, I've scaled back what I've been wearing this last month or so, but I thought I'd share the main bits anyways.

This is my first Benecos product, but I'm confident it won't be my last.  I'd been wanting a dark blue eye liner when I came across this one on iherb, so naturally it ended up in my cart.  The color isn't perfect - it's more of a grey-blue than the rich navy I was looking for - but the actual formula of the pencil is lovely.  It's incredibly soft and creamy, so you hardly have to press at all to get fantastic color payoff, and surprisingly, considering how soft it is, it also sets and stays in place really well.  I'll definitely be ordering a couple more colors in the future.

I got this as a freebie in the same iherb order as the eye liner and I'm surprised how much I like it.  I've become pretty loyal to a few particular lip balms lately, but this has become a new favorite.  It's organic, glides on nicely, and does a good job keeping my lips moisturized.  As of the time I'm posting this, you can still pick any Sierra Bees lip balm free with an iherb order.  If you miss the freebie, they're regularly only $1.95, so super reasonable even at full price!

I've been having issues with powder foundations disappearing off my face in the heat, so I've turned to The All Natural Face's Cream Foundation.  As far as coverage goes, the cream foundation gives a really flawless base and it's thankfully been lasting better than the powders too.  It also feels pretty light on your skin.  My full review is here.

Nicole from EcoChicBeautyDiva has raved about using Pure + Simple's Face Colours as blushes and I've wanted to try them for ages.  I finally decided on Taupe, a cool brown with some golden tones, since I'm still searching for that illusive, perfect contour color for my fair skin.  I'll do a full review with swatches soon.

These shadows are pretty much all that's been on my eyes this past month.  They're excellent quality and if you enjoy warmer-toned neutrals, goWarm is a lovely set.  At first glance, they're on the more expensive side, but if you break the cost down by number of shades, they don't actually cost any more than other natural pressed eye shadows.  You can see my full review for more information and swatches.

What have you been wearing this month?  Do you scale back/change your makeup routine in the warmer weather?
