Top Shelf Deodorant: Current 2020 Favourites

My natural deodorant journey is a little different from most people's.  Aside from a single peach scented Secret exception in my teens (which I don't think I used more than a handful of times), I've used natural deodorant my entire life.  Today, choices are more than plentiful, so I’d never claim to have tried them all, but in 15+ years, you better believe that I’ve tried a fair few! It's been a few years since I've shared my favourites and, while I still stand by those picks, I'm long overdue for an update.  Some of the ones on that list are no longer available, and others I’ve moved away from in favour of formulas that better suit my preferences today.

These are my very top picks and happily, I think there are options to suit just about everyone: scented and unscented, baking soda and baking soda-free, and vegan and non-vegan.  Four of the six are from Canadian brands too, which always makes me happy.

I don't think I'm an overly smelly person, but I can build up some funk and I'm generally not willing to reapply my deodorant throughout the day either, so I need something that's both effective and long-lasting. All six of these have passed my 24-hour life wear test.

New Favourites from Lafe's Bodycare

Lafe's Bodycare is an award-winning natural personal care brand that's been making healthy, sustainable, and affordable plant-based products for 25 years.  It all started with deodorant, but today the line has expanded to encompass body, baby, and hair care too.  Lafe's is a Certified B Corporation and the company also donates 1% of their profits to support breast cancer prevention and environmental awareness

I received an extra generous package from Lafe's last month and, after taking the time to test everything out, I want to talk about my favourite items.  It was a bit of a flash from the past for me as I used to sell Lafe's products back in my health food store retail days, but, while I had a working familiarity with the brand and product line, I had actually tried very few Lafe's products prior to receiving these in the mail.  (I was missing out!)

Let's get right to the products!

The Very Best in Natural Deodorant

Last week I wrote about armpit detox and shared tips and tricks for making the switch to natural deodorant, and today I want to continue on the same topic by sharing some specific product recommendations.  I've tried a lot of natural deodorants over the years and these are my absolute favorites.  I'm not one to fuss with reapplying deodorant multiple times a day and all of these work to keep me smelling fresh all day long.

BAKING SODA OR NO BAKING SODA?
If you ask me, the first - and perhaps most important - consideration when choosing a natural deodorant is whether or not it contains baking soda.  Baking soda is one of the most effective natural odor fighters out there, but because it's so alkaline, in contrast to the slightly acidic pH of our skin, it can cause reactions and irritation for a lot of people.

For that reason, I've divided this list into baking soda deodorants, baking soda-free deodorants, and what I like to call baking soda light deodorants.

BAKING SODA LIGHT DEODORANTS

Of the three categories, this is my personal favorite.  These deodorants DO contain baking soda, obviously, but in lower amounts than a standard baking soda formula, and in combination with other ingredients that balance out the baking soda and reduce the likelihood of irritation.  Even if you're sensitive to traditional baking soda formulas, these may work for you.

Ursa Major Hoppin' Fresh - Hoppin' Fresh has the most similar feel/consistency to a conventional product of any natural deodorant I've used.  The stick is very smooth and solid, and the deodorant, which applies clear, feels almost gel-like.  Along with baking soda, Hoppin' Fresh also contains hops extract, plant enzymes, and essential oils to fight odor, and aloe vera and shea butter to cushion and protect delicate skin.

Blissoma Scentless Stick Deodorant - According to Blissoma, the Scentless Stick contains half the baking soda of your average baking soda deodorant, plus it's balanced out with soothing and nourishing ingredients like zinc oxide, mango seed butter, and sunflower and coconut oils.  Clay, arrowroot powder, and diatomaceous earth also absorb sweat and help fight odor.

BAKING SODA DEODORANTS
Baking soda formulas are great for odor protection, plus they tend to have the simplest and most basic ingredient lists of the three categories.

Botanical Babe Deodorant Cream - With a base of organic shea butter and coconut oil, Botanical Babe's deodorant has a great creamy, buttery consistency that rubs into the skin without much effort.  The baking soda is buffered with arrowroot powder for a formula that feels soft and gentle on the skin.  Grapefruit, lemon, sweet orange, and juniper essential oils also help fight odor and give the deodorant a light and fresh citrus scent.

DIY Cream Deodorant - A few years back, the only deodorant I used was my own homemade cream, and while it wasn't an overly luxurious product, it definitely did the trick.  DIY deodorants are inexpensive, easy to make, and with tons of recipes out there, you can inevitably find one that will suit your needs.  The super simple, no-heat recipe I used can be found HERE.

BAKING SODA-FREE DEODORANTS
If you know you're intolerant to baking soda in deodorant, these are the ones for you!  While still effective, with gentle formulas that rely on other odor fighters, the chance of irritation is much lower.

Weleda Spray Deodorant - The Spray Deodorants are basically just water, alcohol, and essential oils, but for whatever reason, they work better than any homemade spray I've been able to concoct myself.  Alcohol helps the spray dry quickly and works to kill bacteria, while essential oils provide a nice light scent.   The sprays work great both alone and in combination with other products, and I love the tiny travel sizes for on the go too!

Nourish Organic Fresh & Dry Deodorant - The Fresh & Dry deodorant is a moisturizing formula with very similar ingredients to those of a body butter, though it also includes organic corn starch to absorb moisture and plant enzymes to actively digest the bacteria that causes body odor.  The formula is probably the most gentle on the list, but I wouldn't consider its odor protection the strongest.  Your mileage may vary, but for me, this deodorant works great alone in the colder months, but I need to layer it with another product - like the Weleda Spray - during the summer.

Meow Meow Tweet Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream - The Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream is scented with grapefruit, bergamot, sweet orange, and lemon essential oils and gets its odor fighting properties from magnesium hydroxide.  Similar to baking soda, this food grade magnesium is an alkaline mineral that works by creating an inhospitable environment for odor-causing bacteria.  Despite its alkalinity, magnesium is not typically irritating to the skin.

Are you sensitive to baking soda?  What are your favorite natural deodorants?

Armpit Detox + 5 Tips for Switching to Natural Deodorant

There's an abundance of information circulating about WHY you should switch to natural deodorant, but not a whole lot of guides for easing through the actual transition.  And, judging by the number of emails and questions I've gotten on this topic in the nearly five years since I launched this blog, it's obviously an information gap that needs filling!

Natural deodorants DO work, but if you're transitioning from conventional deodorants and antiperspirants, there's a very real detox period that you need to traverse to make them work for you.

Conventional Antiperspirants + Aluminum

Where deodorants work to kill surface bacteria that causes odor, antiperspirants actually inhibit the body's ability to sweat, usually by means of one of a few different aluminum compounds.  Very simply, when aluminum is absorbed into the sweat ducts, it causes them to swell and squeeze closed. Sweat becomes trapped and is unable to escape.

Aluminum has been linked to a lot of scary things: breast cancer, Alzheimer's, hormonal imbalances, kidney disease, and liver toxicity - to name just a few.  Although several of these disease claims have been disproven more recently, it's still an ingredient I recommend avoiding in your personal care products.

Here's my bottom line: Sweating is a natural process.  It's one of the main ways the body detoxifies and regulates temperature, so inhibiting sweat also inhibits the body's ability to perform these basic functions.

Armpit Detox + Why It Matters

Switching from antiperspirant to deodorant is a process.  If you aren't aware of this, it's easy to assume a new deodorant just isn't working, but the reality is, your body needs to both relearn how to sweat normally and process out any aluminum, toxins, and buildup that may have accumulated while you were using antiperspirant.

During this process,  it's completely normal to:
- sweat more
- have stronger smelling sweat
- have thicker sweat
- have itchy armpits
- need to reapply deodorant multiple times a day

I do not consider armpit rashes a normal part of this detox period and would reconsider the deodorant product(s) you're using if you start experiencing rashes or serious irritation.

Beat the Detox: 5 Tips for Switching to Natural Deodorant

1. Consciously Choose WHEN to Make the Switch
Map out a 2-3 week period when you can afford to fuss a little more.  You may end up a little stinky or you may need to reapply your deodorant multiple times during the day, so pick a time when that won't be a serious issue.  You want to avoid flipflopping between antiperspirant and natural deodorant, since that will keep you indefinitely in the detox stage.

2. Get Sweaty
Your body needs to literally push out the aluminum and other toxins that have built up in the sweat ducts, and the only way it can do that is by sweating.  Working up a sweat - be it from exercise, saunas, or hot baths - will help flush these out quicker and shorten the detox period.

3. Drink Extra Water
Staying hydrated is always a good thing, but it's especially vital for any detox.  Water helps your lymph system work more effectively and will help your body expel build up and toxins.  Plus, if you followed number 2, you'll need to replenish the fluids you lost with all that extra sweating!

4. Exfoliate + Mask Your Pits
Just as you exfoliate your face to get rid of dead skin and debris, the same can be helpful for your pits.  Dry brushing pre-shower or using a body scrub or loofah in the shower both work to slough off any of the junk that's being expelled.  Clay masks are also great for opening up and clearing pores, and a simple mask of clay and water (or apple cider vinegar) applied to the underarms a couple times a week during this transition period can do wonders at keeping you smelling better and on track to beating the pit detox!

5. Travel With Your Deodorant
The long term goal is, obviously, to find a deodorant that will keep you smelling great all day long, but realistically, you'll probably need to reapply during the transition period.  Keeping a travel deodorant handy eliminates the stress of smelling midday and not having anything to touch up with. Wipes are another great option for freshening up on the go.

Ursa Major Hoppin' Fresh Deodorant (+ Birthday Giveaway #2!)

Deodorant is undoubtedly one of the most difficult products to green in your routine, but it's also one of the most vital.   Conventional deodorants and antiperspirant are loaded with chemicals, heavy metals, and synthetic fragrance, and lymph nodes in the armpits readily absorb and hold onto these toxins.

Thankfully there are plenty of healthier options out there today, including Ursa Major's new-to-the-scene Hoppin' Fresh Deodorant*.  I've been using Hoppin' Fresh for upwards of a month now and I'm happy to report that it's quickly become one of my favorite deodorants.

It wasn't, however,  a completely smooth road to love for me and this odor fighter.  My testing experience went something like this:

Days 1-3: The honeymoon stage.  I smell fresh and clean all day and love everything about the deodorant.

Days 4-8: Trouble in paradise.  Odor protection starts to last only 4-5 hours before wearing off.  Reapplying helps for a short time, but the deodorant wears off again in another 2-3 hours.

Days 9+: Back on track.  Hoppin' Fresh starts lasting again and I'm back to smelling good the entire day, sans reapplications.

Which just goes to show that, even for someone who's been exclusively using natural deodorant for years, there can still be an adjustment period when switching to something new.

Setting aside odor protection for a moment, the most unique thing about Hoppin' Fresh is just how comparable it is to conventional deodorant in both feel and application.  The deodorant is a smooth, firm stick (not even a hint of crumbling here!) that glides on super easily.  This perfect, almost gel-like consistency is pretty standard in mainstream deodorants, but it's something I haven't found in other natural ones - and goodness knows I've tried more than a few!  It goes on clear, dries quickly, and won't stain clothes either.

The smooth texture is courtesy of a base of soothing aloe vera juice and the often vilified propanediol.  Without going off on too much of a tangent, propanediol is often linked to propylene glycol due to similarities in chemical structure, but there are some notable differences.  Where PG is petrochemical-based, propanediol is mainly derived from corn sugar fermentation.  Manufacturing doesn't have the same environmental impact as that of a petrochemical, nor does the end product carry the same allergy or toxicity concerns.

Hoppin' Fresh isn't an antiperspirant - and really, you wouldn't want it to be! - but kaolin clay does its part absorbing moisture.  I've never felt excessively wet or sweaty while using it.

When it comes to odor protection, Ursa Major has you covered with a powerful trifecta of anti-microbial and anti-bacterial hops extract, baking soda, and essential oils.  I know baking soda is an issue for an increasing number of people, but even if the thought has you cringing in anticipated agony, I wouldn't write this deodorant off just yet.  I've had problems using "simple" baking soda formulas for the last six months or so, but I haven't experienced any irritation from Hoppin' Fresh.  I've even tested it immediately after shaving without any issues.

As I mentioned, it took a little over a week for the odor protection to fully level out for me, but since then, it's been top-notch.  I only apply the deodorant once a day and I still find myself smelling fresh the following morning.  Granted, it's winter here now, but judging by how well it holds up to a sweaty workout, I'm pretty confident Hoppin' Fresh will fare well in the warmer months too.  Out of the tube and freshly applied, the deodorant smells minty and herbal thanks to a blend of plant extracts and peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, and grapefruit essential oils, but while the odor protection lasts, the scent wears off pretty quickly, so even if herbal scents aren't your thing, it's unlikely to bother you much or interfere with any other scents you may want to wear.

The Bottom Line
Whether you're a natural deodorant pro, or you're new and struggling, I think Hoppin' Fresh is worth a try!  It applies very similarly to conventional deodorant and is simultaneously gentle on the skin and offers some of the strongest odor protection I've found in a natural deodorant.

Botanical Babe Natural Deodorant Cream (+ a Giveaway!)

I've tried a lot of natural deodorants over the years, and while I've been fortunate enough to find some great ones, I've also encountered more than a couple duds along the way.  Today I want to introduce Botanical Babe, a lovely Michigan-based small batch natural skincare company that handcrafts all its products, including my newest deodorant discovery, the Natural Deodorant Cream*.

First off, this deodorant really works.  I've tested it through long days, summer heat, and workouts and it hasn't let me down.  I only need to apply it once in the morning and the odor protection lasts all day.

That great odor protection comes from baking soda - which can be an irritant for a lot of people, myself included - but it's tempered here by arrowroot powder and moisturizing organic shea butter and coconut oil.  I've gotten some painful rashes from certain baking soda deodorants in the past, but I haven't had any issues with the Botanical Babe Deodorant Cream.  As a precaution, I don't use it immediately after shaving, but that's my general practice with any baking soda deodorant.

Depending on ambient temperature, the consistency of the deodorant varies between that of a moderately firm butter and a softer, whipped-feeling product, but it's always soft enough to scoop out with just a finger and easy to apply.  The cream rubs in well, leaves skin dry to the touch, and doesn't transfer to clothing.

Arrowroot powder also helps keep you feeling dry once you start sweating, so while it's not an antiperspirant that will prevent sweat, the Deodorant Cream does absorb some moisture.  I'm not a super sweaty person to begin with, so your experience may vary, but with the exception of more vigorous workouts, it keeps me pretty dry throughout the day.

The deodorant is lightly scented with a blend of organic juniper, grapefruit, orange, and lemon essential oils.  I don't really smell the juniper, just a soft sweet citrus aroma.

The Bottom Line
Botanical Babe's Deodorant Cream offers all day odor protection and doesn't cause irritation, despite the baking soda.  It also has a creamy texture and just enough scent to effectively dispel odors without overwhelming your senses.

Ingredients: Organic shea butter, organic coconut oil, sodium bicarbonate, arrowroot powder, organic grapefruit essential oil, organic juniper berry essential oil, organic sweet orange essential oil, organic lemon essential oil.

Andrea from Botanical Babe is also offering one of you the chance to try her deodorant for yourself.  Follow the directions in the Rafflecopter widget to enter.  The giveaway is open to everyone, worldwide.

Make It Work: The Deodorant That Burns Your Pits

I hear time and time again how difficult deodorant is to switch over when transitioning to natural products, and I think it's very true.  First, you have to factor in that many of us come to natural products used to antiperspirants not deodorants and that no natural deodorant is going to stop you from sweating the way an antiperspirant does.  After this first hurdle, you come to the even larger problem of finding something that works without needing to be reapplied every thirty minutes AND doesn't irritate one's delicate arm pits.

Baking soda is one of the best odor-absorbing ingredients out there, but because of how alkaline it is (a ph of 8.5, versus the 4.5-5 ph of the skin's natural acid mantle), it can cause skin reactions in a lot of people.  It really depends on the individual: some people can tolerate it fine, others not at all, and for others still - like me - it all comes down to how much is used in a given product.

Schmidt's Deodorant is pretty popular around the blogosphere, so I was excited to get my hands on it over the summer.  It passed the smell test - all day odor protection - but it always managed to turn my armpits into an angry, red, bumpy battlefield.  Eventually I gave up and set it aside.

You might know - if you've ever seen my empties posts - just how much I hate to waste products, so months later, I decided to try my hand at transforming this deodorant into something I could more comfortably use.

Based off several different variations of homemade deodorant I've made, I combined:

7/8 of a jar of Schmidt's Lavender Sage Deodorant
An equal amount of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Sprinkle of Ora's Amazing Herbal Clay/Arrowroot-based Body Powder (arrowroot powder, cornstarch, or kaolin clay would work fine too)
5 drops Young Living Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil

I melted the Schmidt's and coconut oil together over a double boiler, then removed it from the heat and stirred in the last two ingredients.  After that, it's just a matter of pouring it into jars and waiting for it to cool.

The Results?

Today was my first day using it, but so far it's everything I was hoping for!  It hasn't burned or irritated my pits, and it still works well to keep any stink at bay.  As an added bonus, it's also a perfect creamy, buttery consistency now, where the Schmidt's was always very solid and required a lot more effort to work into the skin.

I'll keep you guys updated once I've used it for longer, but so far, I'm really happy with how it turned out.

P.S. Check out my favorite, super simple DIY Deodorant recipe here.

Savon Du Bois Completely Natural Deodorant

Savon Du Bois is a Canadian company best known for their handmade goat's milk soaps.  They also make massage oils, bug spray, body powders, and various other body care products.  I'd been chatting with them on twitter for a couple months when they asked if I would be interested in reviewing their Completely Natural Deodorant.  Having never used a spray deodorant before, I was eager to give it a try!

The deodorant comes in a lovely blue glass spray bottle and is available in three scents.  I chose the scent-free one, but there are also fresh floral (rose-geranium, sweet orange, lavender and clary sage) and heavenly herbal (sage, lavender, lemon and clary sage) scents to choose from.

The scent-free one contains no essential oils or fragrance.  It smells like alcohol when you first spray it, but the smell dissipates very quickly.  As you might expect, the deodorant goes on pretty wet, so I recommend waiting a minute or two after you apply it, before getting dressed.  Another thing to keep in mind is that there's nothing absorptive in the deodorant, so if you sweat, you may feel wet.

On me, I don't find the deodorant keeps smells at bay for more than a few hours, so I need to reapply several times throughout the day.  I'm fine with that for days when I'm at home, but it isn't the most practical when I'm working or out running around all day.  That said, I do think the efficacy of natural deodorants has a lot to do with how products interact with your individual body chemistry, so just because this doesn't last all day on me, doesn't mean it won't work better on someone else.

Going by this experience and my numerous other deodorant experiments over the last couple years, I think I can say with some confidence that deodorants with baking soda work best for me.  But, I know many people react to baking soda in deodorants, so if that's you, Savon Du Bois' deodorant may end up being a good fit!  It's gentle on your skin, and even though it contains alcohol, I didn't get any dryness or irritation from using it.

Cost-wise, it's also pretty affordable.  The 80ml bottle (pictured above) sells for $13 and it does last quite a while.  There are also 400ml refills available for $39.

Ingredients:  Ethyl alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Distillate, Glycerin, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil.

DIY Witch Hazel Deodorant

I still like the DIY cream deodorant recipe I posted back in August, but I wanted to try something new, which is where this one comes in.  I was browsing deodorants one day and kept coming across liquid roll-on formulas that had witch hazel fairly high up in the ingredients.  Eying my almost-full bottle of Humphrey's Witch Hazel Astringent, I came up with this recipe.  It uses only two ingredients and just might be the easiest DIY you'll ever find.  It literally takes all of 20 seconds to mix up.

Recipe
1 ounce witch hazel astringent
4 drops lavender essential oil (or other essential oil(s) of your choice)

Pour ingredients into a bottle and shake to combine.

Love at First Swipe
This is basically the same thing I use as a toner on my face and I'll admit I was skeptical of how well it would would perform as a deodorant, but right from the first application, I was smitten.  I saturated a cotton ball with the mixture, swiped it on, gave it a minute to dry, then got dressed and went about my day.  That night, I checked back, and even with some up-close and personal sniffing, I couldn't smell anything.  Like a good blogger, I diligently tested this, checking every day for stinkyness.  It worked great - no irritation, no unsightly white marks on my clothes, and absolutely no sweaty smells to be found!

A Short-Lived Affair
Unfortunately, after about a month of using it, the deodorant stopped working.  There were no hints, no gradual lessening of effectiveness, just an abrupt 180 - one day we were great and the next, it was over.  I was stinky again.  I tried using different essential oils, adding more essential oils, and even reapplying throughout the day, but to no avail.  I'm so disappointed!  After a month of working perfectly, I can't seem to get this deodorant to work at all anymore.

The Bottom Line
While it worked, this was probably my favorite deodorant I've ever used.  Long term is another story, and for whatever reason, it stopped being effective for me.  Still, deodorant can be a funny thing and tends to interact differently with different people's body chemistry, so just because it stopped working for me, doesn't mean it won't work for you.  I'd still recommend giving it a try.  Besides being ridiculously easy to make, these are inexpensive ingredients that I expect many of us already have lying around.  Really, what have you got to lose?

I'm back to using my cream deodorant again, but I have to ask: store bought or homemade, what's your favorite deodorant?  Are there any wacky DIY concoctions on your vanity?

Also, you've still got one more day to enter my SoapStix Giveaway.  If you haven't entered yet, make sure you head on over before time's up!

Easy DIY Cream Deodorant

I've been wanting to start concocting more things myself, so when my regular, purchased deodorant stopped working so well, I decided it was the perfect time to try my hand at making my own.

I found a ton of different recipes, but I didn't really follow any of them, opting instead for just adding ingredients to a bowl until my mixture reached a decent consistency, then crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.  Surprisingly, it turned out pretty great!  (What didn't turn out so well are the photos of this adventure, so I hope you'll forgive that this post is a little lacking in that department.)

Here's the recipe I came up with:

2  1/4 tsp baking soda
3  1/2 tsp arrowroot powder, corn starch, kaolin clay, or other baking soda buffer
1 tbsp coconut oil
10 drops lime essential oil
4 drops orange essential oil
4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
4 drops spearmint essential oil

What's nice about this recipe is that it doesn't require any heat, so it's super quick to whip up.  I just stirred together the dry ingredients, then mixed in the coconut oil and essential oils until everything was well combined. When I first made it, in the winter, it was fine at room temperature, but since it's gotten warmer, the coconut oil stays liquid and I find it too messy to use that way.  Instead, I've been storing it in a small jar in the fridge, then just scooping out about a pea-sized amount to apply.  As long as you're planning to store it in the fridge, you could also put it in a deodorant tube, since it's stay solid enough to apply that way too.  Alternately, you could try adding in a little beeswax, which will help it stay more solid at room temperature.

One last thing that's worth mentioning is to always make sure you're using high quality essential oils.  I use Young Living, since a lot of the essential oils you find on shelves are diluted with other junk or extracted using chemicals.

I'm not the smelliest person to begin with, but this has been keeping me totally stink-free throughout this hot, humid summer.  What's more, I'll even catch whiffs of the deodorant during the day, which is kind of nice, since I do like how it ended up smelling.  It's super simple to make and ends up being cheaper than a lot of natural, store bought deodorants.  Also, you can control exactly what goes into it and you play around with the recipe until it's exactly to your liking!

Have you ever tried your hand at making your own deodorant?  If so, how did it go?
