Rachel's Plan Bee Body Polish + Body Oil

Rachel's Plan Bee has been on my radar for quite some time, so when Rachel reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in trying some products, I had a bit of a fangirl moment.  After composing myself, I was quick to sign on.

Why was I so excited?  In the company's own words -

"We are a small family business on a mission to make your skin happy.  We create natural and pure recipes packed with love that deliver skin softening goodness combined with excellent customer service and a promise to always do better for our customers and our community.  It's all about doing work that we love, sharing it with you and revealing the inner beauty found in all of us."

It doesn't get much better than that, am I right?

All Rachel's Plan Bee products are made with wholesome, natural ingredients and are free of parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, gluten, and artificial colors and flavours.

Keep reading to find out what I thought of the Body Polish and newly launched Body Oil.

Original Body Polish*

I think I can count the number of times I've actually bought a body scrub on one hand.  Not because I don't enjoy them, but because I tend to mix up my own at home instead.  Let me just say: Rachel's Plan Bee blows pretty much every scrub I've ever made out of the water.

If a traditional sugar scrub is - at its most basic - a mix of sugar and oil, then this one is more like a combination of sugar and a rich body butter.  It has a buttery, sort of whipped consistency that means you will never be left dripping wet and frantically searching for something to stir your scrub with after the oil and sugar have separated again. (Tell me this has happened to you too?!)

The consistency, which I expect is largely due to the shea butter, beeswax and clay included, also means that your skin is left nicely moisturized but not oily.  It's enough hydration that I don't feel like I need to use a moisturizer after the polish, but not so much that my skin feels like it's coated in a layer of oil.

I also really like the somewhat delicate grittiness of the Body Polish, which uses smaller sugar crystals than those found in a lot of other scrubs.  This lends a great, uniform texture and also makes it a breeze to get an even exfoliation.  The smaller, almost sand-like particles also make for a very versatile scrub: I can use it just as easily to buff and soften my rough heels as I can to gently exfoliate my winter-weary hands.

I tried the Original Polish, which has the company's signature citrus vanilla scent, but there are also three other scent choices currently available: Lavender Spirit (lavender, vanilla and chamomile), Vanilla & Spice (vanilla with a hint of cinnamon) and Mint Julep (lemon, mint and eucalyptus).

This oil made it into last week's top gift picks under $25, so if you saw that post, you already know how much I love it.  Created after many customer requests, the Body Oil is a blend of plant oils, including apricot kernel oil, meadowfoam seed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, and cranberry seed oil.  It's a little thicker than some other body oils I've used, but it has a good slip to it and spreads easily.  It also absorbs really well, particularly when applied onto damp skin.

Like the Original Body Polish, the Body Oil is scented with a blend of citrus and vanilla, although I find the citrus component is milder in the oil, making it mainly a vanilla scent.  As it wears on the skin, I feel like I smell like a tray of cookies.   If you like sweet, vanilla, bakery-type scents, I think you will love how this oil smells.

Regular readers will know that my love for unscented moisturizers runs pretty deep and I will say there are times when I reach for an unscented product over the body oil.  But, for days when I want a little more scent, this oil has totally won me over.  It leaves my skin beautifully hydrated and incredibly soft to the touch as well.

The Bottom Line
I love both of these!  Used either together or individually, I think they're great products.  The texture of the Body Polish is pretty near perfect and I love the multitude of scents available.  It would be great to see more scent options for the oil in the future too.  And maybe even - dare I say it - an unscented one.

Maple Coconut Salt Scrub: Mini Batch Recipe

As much as I love mixing up my own DIY skincare products, sometimes the thought of actually taking the time to make something can be daunting.  Scrubs are one of the simplest things you can whip up, but even so, there are days when it seems like too big of a hassle.  Times like that, I'll often mix up enough for just one use.  Sure, it might end up being more work in the long run, but in the moment, it seems a lot easier!  You also don't have to worry about storage or how long a product will be good for.

This is a new recipe I came up with earlier today.  It makes just enough for one use and the combination of the coconut oil and the maple flavour is phenomenal.  I think it's the best smelling non-food item that's ever come out of my kitchen!  You can use this either before or after cleansing, depending on your preference.  I used it after, just quickly rinsing off the salt, because I wanted to maximize the amount of moisture my skin retained from the coconut oil and shea butter.  This also helped the scent last - I smelled so good, I was sniffing my arms all day long!

Recipe
1 tbsp virgin coconut oil
1/2 tbsp shea butter
2 tbsp sea salt
1/8 tsp natural maple flavor

Add coconut oil and shea butter to a small heatproof measuring cup or bowl.  Set measuring cup or bowl in a pot with 1-2 inches water in the bottom and bring to a low simmer.  Stirring constantly, heat until just melted together.  Remove from heat and add to sea salt, along with maple flavor.  Mix until all ingredients are well combined.

That's it!

Melting the coconut oil and shea butter

The finished product.  My scrub was pink from the Himalayan sea salt I used

Tips
  • Make sure to use sea salt, which is full of minerals and is also a natural detoxifier for your skin.  Regular table salt lacks these beneficial properties and also contains iodine and chemical anti-clumping agents, which you don't want on your skin (or in your food for that matter!)
  • Alternately, you can replace the salt with any other exfoliant you like.  Opt for sugar if you prefer a gentler scrub.
  • The oil in the scrub may make your tub slippery...be careful!

The Bottom Line
Homemade scrubs are a great, affordable way to exfoliate your skin and I'll definitely be whipping this concoction up again!  It left my dry winter skin feeling smooth and hydrated, even without applying any additional moisturizer afterwards.  I'm so in love with the coconut maple scent too.  Seriously, if someone out there sold products that smelled exactly like this, that would be awesome.  I could definitely get behind a maple coconut lip balm or shower gel!

Nourish Organic Body Polish Review

This time of year, it's super important to exfoliate your skin.  The colder weather makes our skin more susceptible to moisture loss, and if you aren't sloughing off any already dead skin, it's that much harder to keep your skin hydrated.  There are plenty of different ways to exfoliate, but one of the simplest is to use a scrub like Nourish's Organic Body Polish.

Product Description: Every shower or bath brings with it the opportunity to renew and refresh skin, leaving it smooth and glowing with good health. Simply cleanse with the USDA certified organic blend of ground murumuru and cupuacu seeds, corn cob nutrients, forbidden and jade pearl rice, nourishing aloe, and pomegranate oil. Gentle enough to use every day.

Ingredients: Organic aloe barbadensis leaf juice, organic cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, purified water, potassium hydroxide, organic helianthus annuus (sunfower) seed oil, organic sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, organic jade pearl rice, organic cyamopsis tetragonoloba (guar) gum, organic cocos nucifera (coconut) milk, tocopherol (vitamin E), organic punica granatum (pomegranate) seed oil, organic theobroma grandiflorum (cupuacu) seed, organic astrocaryum (murumuru) seed, organic forbidden rice, organic corn cob grit, organic camellia sinensis leaf (green tea) extract.

Price: $9.99 from Nourish or $8.25 from Vitacost

My Thoughts: This is a fantastic product to have in your beauty arsenal.  Unlike a lot of other scrubs that are oil based, Nourish's Body Polish is a scrub housed in a castile soap base.  This means that while it exfoliates, it also lathers up and serves as a body wash too.  Also, while a lot of other scrubs are made from sugar or salt, the grittiness here is from two kinds of rice, corn grits, and murumuru and cupuacu seeds.  It's all finely milled and it really is gentle enough to use every day, just like Nourish claims.  It's also not scented, though the ingredients do give it a light, fresh, slightly starchy smell, kind of like cornmeal.

The combination of being unscented and the gentleness of the exfoliants convinced me to try it as a face scrub and I've been loving using it on my face also.  Sometimes I do wish it was a little rougher for my body, but that same gentleness makes it perfect for the face, where it leaves my skin cleansed, exfoliated, and super soft.  For that reason, I wouldn't change a thing about this product!  It's become my new favorite face scrub and I've also been enjoying it as a body polish in rotation with other coarser scrubs.

The Bottom Line: Nourish's products have awesome ingredients, are super affordable, and if the body polish is anything to go on, are fantastic quality too.  I'll definitely be checking out more of their line in the future!
