Natural/Non-Toxic Picks at Sephora?

Today's post is something a little bit different.  Basically, I'm looking for your input on healthier products that can be found at Sephora.  Usually Sephora is one of those stores I steer clear of, both because of the cloud of artificial fragrance that surrounds it and the general lack of products that I would consider clean enough to use.  They're also notorious (in my mind anyways) for greenwashing and trying to pass toxic products off as safe and natural.  Not to mention just how pricey everything is!

That said, over the summer, I was gifted a bath set from Sephora that I ended up returning, and now, after five months of sitting on the store credit, I've decided it's about time I spent it.  The thing is, after a couple quick looks at their website, I'm not seeing a lot of things I want to use it on!

Here's what I've been considering...

Bare Minerals 100% Natural Lipcolor
Josie Maran Organic Argan Oil

Alternately, I could put the money towards a bigger splurge like a new flat iron (which I do need, but probably wouldn't buy as expensive a one otherwise) or a Clarisonic (which I've been curious about for a while now, but probably do not actually need.)

What do you think of Sephora?  Do you shop there?  What do you think I should spend my store credit on?

  1. Nope.Even if I do,I prefer to spend it on beauty tools there since there're some ingredients that I avoid on some sephora's natural products..

    1. I know what you mean...I don't know what standards they use to classify products as natural, but they're questionable at best!

    2. Err...green washing standard maybe?:D Kidding:) Anyway,Josie Maran's products also have some flaws which I avoid. As for its argan oil,I think there're alot of argan oils out there with much cheaper price..

    3. Haha true :) I know it's sorta overpriced, but least JM doesn't add anything to her plain argan oil! I think I'm going to have to just go into a store and check everything out :D

  2. You should splurge on a new flat iron - a couple of my friends each have one from Sephora that can be used on wet hair and they constantly rave about it :) I used to shop at Sephora all the time, but, like you, I realized they don't have a lot of truly natural products. However, I do like a lot of Bare Minerals products and the Josie Maran argan oil is just argan oil. Sephora.com does have tabs you can expand for product ingredients, so at least you can check those out before you make a purchase (unlike other websites)

    1. I noticed the ingredients tab too - I can't stand websites without product ingredients, lol:) And I'll have to look into the flat irons more...I could definitely see one that could be used on wet hair coming in handy! Thanks for the suggestion :)

  3. Sounds like we have very similar feelings regarding Sephora. I've often questioned the validity of their natural seal.

I'm not sure how much store credit you have, but that lipstick looks pretty dreamy..so I might go with that! If not, putting it toward a flat iron seems like a wise decision. I absolutely love argan oil, and I've tried Josie Maran's before with success, but Watts Beauty sells a much cheaper bottle that's also organic. They don't sell it at Sephora, but I felt like I should let you know before you overpaid!

    1. Yup, I don't really give any credit to the Sephora natural seal, at least not without scrutinizing the actual ingredients first.

I know the Josie Maran argan oil is overpriced compared to other brands, I just figured if it was basically free with the credit, it might be worth it anyways. I've been meaning to try argan oil for ages now and just haven't gotten around to it yet! I'll have to check out the Watts Beauty one though :) Thanks!

  4. I do shop a lot a Sephora, but I am not someone who avoids certain ingredients or only uses natural products. I don't believe in Sephora's natural seal, I believe it is "greenwashing". Since you are a lady who prefers natural products, I'd spend your money on the hair straightener rather than any cosmetics. I think a lot of companies know that it is becoming more trendy to be "green" and they take advantage of it. In most mass-produces cosmetics, you are going to find ingredients that are far from natural. Also, there is the issue that they mass-produce their products which is not very "green" or natural either. Personally, if I decided to only wear natural cosmetics, I would not be shopping at Sephora. I would stick with smaller, independent companies that you have researched.

    1. Yup, I agree. I do mostly stick to smaller companies, since it's usually easier to find out more information about them/their products. This time, I did end up going for the bare minerals lipstick. It's my first bare minerals product, but I really like it so far :D
